Ring Ceremony Decoration at Home: Setup & Ring Platter Ideas

More and more families in Nagpur, Bhandara and across Vidarbha hold the ring ceremony at home. The guest list is close family, the elders are comfortable, and the money saved on a hall goes into the wedding. A home engagement can look every bit as good as a banquet one in photos. It just needs a plan for three things: where the couple stands, what is behind them, and what the rings are presented on.

Step 1: Pick the right spot

Walk through the house with the photographer's eye, not the host's.

  • Living room: the usual choice. Move the sofa set out, and you typically have 8 to 12 feet of wall for the backdrop.
  • Terrace: more space and better for a bigger family, but plan shade for a day function and lights for an evening one. Check the wind before hanging anything light.
  • Building hall or society clubhouse: a good middle ground if your flat is small. Ask about timings and whether you can fix things to the walls.

Wherever you choose, leave a clear space of at least six feet in front of the backdrop. That is where the couple stands for the exchange and where the family gathers for the group photo.

Step 2: A backdrop that fits a small room

  • Floral arch behind a couple sofa. One round or rectangular arch, in fresh or artificial flowers. It frames the couple without filling the room.
  • Names or initials board. A cut-out or neon sign with the couple's names, set on a fabric or green-wall panel. Instantly recognisable in every shared photo.
  • Drape and flower clusters. Soft pastel fabric pleated across the wall with three or four flower clusters. Budget-friendly and works on any wall colour.
  • Traditional sakharpuda look. Marigold and mogra strings, a decorated low seat or chowki, brass lamps and a rangoli in front. Best when the ceremony includes the full rituals with the families seated on the floor.
  • Fairy-light curtain. Warm lights behind sheer fabric, ideal for an evening function on the terrace.

Seating: a two-seater sofa or two decorated chairs for the couple, plus chairs for the elders on both sides so they are close for the blessings.

Step 3: Eight ring platter ideas

The ring platter is the one prop that appears in the most important photo of the day. Match it to the backdrop colours and keep it steady.

  1. Floral ring box. A small round box filled with roses or carnations, with a cushion in the middle for the two rings. Elegant and easy to hold.
  2. Mirror tray with names. A mirror base with the couple's names or the date in gold vinyl, a few flowers at one corner. Reflects light beautifully in photos.
  3. Brass or silver thali. Lined with a betel leaf, with haldi-kumkum, akshat and a small diya beside the rings. Perfect for a traditional sakharpuda.
  4. Heart-shaped platter. A heart-shaped tray in red roses or white flowers. Romantic and a favourite with younger couples.
  5. Acrylic platter with initials. Clear acrylic with the couple's initials engraved or painted, and a little greenery. Modern and minimal.
  6. Velvet cushion on a stand. Two rings on a small velvet pillow, tied with a satin ribbon, on a short decorative stand. Looks formal and keeps the rings at hand height.
  7. Mini jhula platter. A tiny decorated swing with the rings resting in its seat. A playful talking point for guests.
  8. Shell or bowl of petals. A wide shell or glass bowl filled with petals, rings resting on top. Simple, pretty and easy to make at home.

Platter tips:

  • Tie the rings with a thin ribbon to the cushion or flowers. A ring that rolls under the sofa is a moment nobody wants.
  • Keep fresh flowers away from the rings if the platter is made a day early; they wilt overnight. Use artificial or preserved flowers close to the rings and add fresh ones on the morning.
  • Choose one person to carry the platter and hand it over, and tell them the cue.
  • Keep a plain backup tray nearby in case the main one tips.

Step 4: Light the moment

Ceiling lights alone make faces look flat. Add one or two warm lights aimed at the couple from the front, at head height. For an evening function, a few warm lights hidden at the base of the backdrop add depth. If you want cold pyro, low fog or confetti at the exchange, agree on the exact cue with whoever runs it, and check the ceiling height and smoke detectors first.

A checklist for the day

  • Backdrop and seating finished at least an hour before guests arrive
  • A clear six-foot space in front of the couple
  • Ring platter ready, rings tied, one person in charge of it
  • Warm light on the couple, fan or cooler placed out of the frame
  • Thalis for the rituals and a tray for gifts beside the seating
  • Small photo corner near the door for guest selfies
